Ventura County Fair + Recent Eats

On Friday evening, Adrian and I headed over to the Ventura County Fair! I heard on our local country radio station that Old Dominion was playing and couldn’t pass up the chance to see them live – especially since the concerts is included in the $12 admission ticket! In case you haven’t heard of them here’s one of my favorites (& one of their biggest hits):

We didn’t get there until a little after 6:00 because Friday night traffic was insane and the concert was starting at 7:30, so we basically did a quick round of the food stands, scarfed down “healthy” vegan burritos, did a loop of the midway, and headed to the grandstand for the show.

I found these costumes extremely entertaining...and they kept using amazing puns!

The show was great, but freezing cold – I’m not used to ocean breezes now that we moved to the valley! It was awesome because not only did Old Dominion play their biggest hits like Snap Back, Break Up With Him, and Nowhere Fast, but they also played a bunch of huge hits that they had written for other artists – including Tyler Farr’s “A Guy Walks Into a Bar” and Blake Shelton’s “Sangria.”

Then it was time to check out the livestock barns to pet all the adorable goats and sheep! (I was more than a little bummed that there were no cows there to visit.) I have a couple of cute videos on my Instagram and Adrian captured this hilarious video:

Watch until the end – it’s worth it! We’ve played that at least 5 times since and we laugh so hard EVERY. TIME.

We also got to pet a bunch of gorgeous horses, including 2 half-sister Clydesdale fillies that were only 4 1/2 months old!

Before leaving we also discovered Adrian’s new favorite dessert – DEEP FRIED OREOS!

Garden Variety RunnerThey were 5 for $5 and we were both super excited when they handed us a tray with 6 of them. We left a little before the fair closed at 10pm. If you live in the area, the fair goes until next Sunday and each night has a featured concert. It’s totally worth going to even if you aren’t really into fair rides.

In other news, just to keep up some normalcy around here, I’ll leave you with some recent eats from this week…

Sunday night pizza made from frozen dough and topped with tomatoes, jalapeños, garlic, and non-dairy cashew mozzarella cheese.

Monday night was an easy, go-to meal in our household. Farro with chopped onions, diced tomatoes, chopped kale (or spinach depending on what’s on hand) and chickpeas. Topped with some fresh basil and leftover “cotija cheese” from this meal.

One of the many variations of “a grain, a protein, and a vegetable” on Thursday night – this time with 2 veggies. This meal was fire-roasted tomato lentils, sage and [vegan] butter quinoa, baked sweet potatoes, and roasted broccoli.

And, finally, before heading to the fair on Friday we has carrot hot dogs for lunch. I’ve seen these all over social media recently and we had two huge carrots just waiting to be barbecued.

The leeks weren't worth mentioning...not so great.

Sorry for the funky lens flare, my iPhone camera does that all the time!

I’ll update tomorrow with a recap of the rest of the weekend. I hope that you had a very relaxing weekend, especially if you’re a teacher like me and this is one of your last weekends of freedom!

When was the last time you went to a fair? Have you been to a fair this summer?

We went to the Santa Barbara Fair a year and a half ago and I went to the Jackson County Fair in Oregon with my mom 2 years ago!
